Located on the East side of Gibraltar, the beautiful beach of Sandy Bay is the hub for most of our sessions. Sandy Bay is situated between the idyllic fishing village Catalan Bay in the North and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gorham’s Cave in the South. The gentle waves of the Mediterranean come to shore from the East, whereas fantastic rock formations and the Great Gibraltar Sand Dune sooth visitors’ eyes in the West. On expeditions beyond the bay, SUPers can catch glimpses of Africa in the distance and paddle to impressive sea caves which are part of the Rock of Gibraltar.
The waters of Sandy Bay are home to a wide range of marine species, some of which can be seen in the clear water while SUPing in the bay – among them are octopus, starfish, rainbow wrasse and zebra bream. Dolphin sightings are frequent, even from the shoreline – another highlight to add to the SUP experience.
Two curved groynes and a frontal breakwater ensure safe swimming and SUPing within Sandy Bay. During touristy seasons, fully trained life guards monitor the water activities of all beach users.
The spectacular beach of Sandy Bay has something else that is a rare commodity in Gibraltar: space. The beach is big enough for hundreds of people to enjoy outdoor activities of their choice without disturbing other beachgoers – whether this be sunbathing or swimming, playing volleyball or kayaking, snorkeling or SUPing, making sandcastles or simply enjoying a picknick.
It is not surprising, that after a SUP session in the Mediterranean Sea, the fine golden white sand of Sandy Bay’s beach appeals to many of our participants to stay and simply enjoy.

Low Environmental Impact
Our center is located in the middle of Sandy Bay. Thanks to our staff, participants and volunteers, we have already managed to work around some of the obstacles to make it inclusive for everyone. The fully functional center features changing rooms and storage for our SUP and surf boards. The space is used for meetings, teaching, coaching and yoga sessions as well as for board maintenance and repair.
We are using recycled materials where we can and run the center off grid. It is a safe place where we can be approached for any SUP-related and non-SUP-related matters on the minds of our participants, volunteers and the local community.
Yet, the centre is a work in progress with one of the most pressing issues being better accessibility for SUPers with mobility issues.
